It was way back in 1990 when the original Lexus LS 400 hit the markets with considerable force, causing a stir amongst consumers and the competition alike. Call it the original disruptor.
Twenty-six years later and the 2016 Lexus LS is still stirring the pot. It’s a great option for the busy byways of Southern Ontario; comfortable, smooth, reliable, stylish, uncompromising in every way.
As the flagship for the brand, the LS is a true competitor in its class, especially when it comes to comfort and drivability (we’ll get to that). But the fresh Lexus styling is still all there, too (yeah, you know that Grille’s been ‘Spindled’). Visibly, it’s more muscular in the hood, and slightly broader from the rear than its predecessor—more than a pinch of attitude, but still very much a top-end saloon.
Inside, the supple seats, wood inlay, leather accents and chrome features all deliver the message that, yes, you belong here. The driver’s seat does much the same, only with more to keep you engaged.
Old-school lovers of analogue will get along with the system controls. As is the norm for most luxury sedans, the dash is kept relatively minimalist, with the control of the 12-3-inc high-res display coming via the Remote Touch Interface. If the feel of that non-touch-screen control really gets you going, then you’ll probably also dig the clock inset above the screen.
Inevitably, when you start comparing luxury sedans, you back to the question of ride comfort. And in a segment with plenty of cushy, comfy, don’t-want-to-get-out-yet interiors, and silent rides, the 2016 Lexus LS stands out. The 8-speed automatic transmission, in any of the three modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), is a smoother than smooth ride.
But that’s not to say that the 2016 LS doesn’t have the ability to thrill. The LS’s 4.6-L V8 engine producing 360 hp—not trying to be anything it isn’t—still gets up like a Monday morning, and gives off a nice note when coaxed up to the red line.
